WHAT IS CEIR?

The CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) portal is a web-based platform launched by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India. The portal has been designed to provide a centralised database of all mobile phones that are being used in the country. The primary aim of the CEIR portal is to reduce the incidents of mobile phone theft and misuse by enabling the blocking of stolen or lost mobile phones.

The CEIR portal is accessible to both individual users and law enforcement agencies. Individual users can access the portal to check the status of their mobile phones and report them as lost or stolen. Law enforcement agencies can access the portal to track and investigate cases of mobile phone theft and other related crimes.

The CEIR portal works by registering the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of all mobile phones in the country. The IMEI number is a unique identification number that is assigned to every mobile phone. Once the IMEI number is registered on the CEIR portal, any mobile phone with a registered IMEI number can be tracked and blocked in case it is reported as stolen or lost.

To report a mobile phone as lost or stolen, users need to provide their personal details along with the IMEI number of their mobile phone. Once the complaint is registered, the CEIR portal automatically sends a blocking request to all telecom service providers in the country, thereby blocking the reported mobile phone on all networks.

In addition to blocking lost or stolen mobile phones, the CEIR portal also has other features such as tracking the status of a blocking request, checking the status of a mobile phone (whether it is genuine or fake), and generating various reports related to mobile phone theft and blocking.

Overall, the CEIR portal is an important initiative by the Indian government to reduce the incidents of mobile phone theft and misuse. By enabling the blocking of stolen or lost mobile phones, the CEIR portal helps to safeguard the privacy and security of mobile phone users in the country.
